I have never been one for mindset as I was not really aware of it, not until I worked for a holistic chiropractor that is.
Dr Ari, a Greek Australian would always start the day reviewing his day shift of patients and any gaps in his diary would say, “Right, we need to fill these so make a mental note and send it out”. I smirked, “what do you mean”? He would say that in order to fill the spaces in the day you need to visualise the gaps and them being filled by patients. “Are you being serious”? I would ask. This went on everyday and I would get so frustrated with him. I would do my usual, call around patients who need to re-book in, doing actions in order to fill the gaps however I could never fill all of them. The more I opened up to the thought of visualising what I wanted, the more I realised that I had been doing it in the past and not been aware of it.
Things like failing all the way through my degree and then visualising my final year (4thyear) as doing so well that I got a 2:1. I would not be satisfied with anything less so my vibrations and visualisations were strong, I was not aware it was a technique I was using to get what I wanted from life. I remembered this had happened again with a flat that I wanted. I had set in my mind exactly what I wanted; the total I wanted to spend per month, the location, the landlords being lovely, no agencies attached, even down to wanting high ceilings and white shutters on the big bay windows.
Now you will never guess what happened? I got exactly this and within a few weeks of visualising what I wanted. I hadn’t been looking that hard as I knew we had time on our side so I was in a positive mindset when I visualised this. I learnt later that this is a good way to be when you set intentions or desires.
The more I look into this stuff – the power of the mind, the more evidence I find about how our mindset can not only give us what we want, but also can help cure illnesses.
Norman Cousins – known as the man who cured himself through laughter from a fatal illness. He was diagnosed and told he only had 1 month to live then decided to leave hospital and just enjoy himself while he could. He did nothing but laugh and laugh every day. He wrote original jokes, which he would read aloud to himself then laugh like crazy. He noticed that every time he laughed, his pain was eased. At the end of one month, Cousins returned to the hospital for a check up and to the surprise of the medical staff they found no trace of his disease. He was completely cured! He had not taken any medicine since he was told his ailment was incurable.
Dr Khalid Khan, a Medical NLP Master Health Practitioner, General Medical Practitioner, Acupuncturist, GP Trainer and former community pharmacist shows numerous examples from his patients. One example he gave on a recent talk was about the thoughts of patients in a ward not knowing whether they will live or die. The ones who walked out the hospital healthy were the ones who were spoken to by the nurses, asking the patients daily “What are you going to do when you get out of here then”? “You going to play golf when you leave?”, “Bet you’re children can’t wait to see you when you leave here?” All positive, future focussed visualisations getting patients to focus on the fact that they could leave and they will get better.
Hypno-birthing is another example of how powerful the mind is which my sister-in-law experienced. Also, my granddad in India witnessed people under going invasive surgery without drugs and purely with mindset exercises.
It’s all very powerful stuff and seeing as we are the most technologically advanced we have ever been yet we are suffering from the most illnesses, it makes me think (no pun intended).
More and more research is coming out about the power of the mind and with amazing examples discussed above of how it’s being used. Science has only just scratched the surface as to how much our minds can control our bodies, its an exciting future we have ahead of us.
I’d like to believe that if life is in fact, mind over matter, imagine what the world would be like.
