Star Wars news is all the rage at this moment in time. We have had our first glimpse at footage for Solo: A Star Wars Story which is set for a release in May 2018. Then, Lucasfilm announced that Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff & Weiss will be writing and producing a new Star Wars film series that will be separate from the episodic saga and Rian Johnson’s new trilogy. Now, we have more news about what plans Lucasfilm has for Star Wars from a television perspective.
Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, has given some updates to investors on a quarterly earnings call about the ideas Lucasfilm has for the future. We already know that one live-action Star Wars television series is being developed. Bob Iger has now stated that multiple Star Wars television series are being made for Disney’s streaming service. One could be announced very soon if Iger’s comments are anything to go by. Here is what he had to say on the whole situation:
“We are developing not just one, but a few Star Wars series specifically for the Disney direct to consumer app. We’ve mentioned that and we are close to being able to reveal at least one of the interties that is developing that for us. Because the deal isn’t completely closed, we can’t be specific about that […] I think you’ll find the level of talent […] on the television front will be rather significant as well”.
As a massive Star Wars fan, I want as much quality Star Wars content being made by talented people in the entertainment industry as possible. As you can imagine, Bob Iger’s comments on this particular matter make me extremely happy.
Benioff & Weiss
Bob Iger also discussed the recent addition of Benioff & Weiss to the Star Wars franchise and gave some small insight into what they were planning to do:
“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we’ve actually been talking to them for a long time. To my knowledge, they didn’t express interest in creating a series. They have an idea for a number of films and at some later date, I’m sure we’ll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there”.
