Living on Oahu is amazing, but when I have a long weekend I love to explore the neighbour islands.
Since I haven’t visited Maui in two years, it seemed necessary to take a quick trip over Easter weekend.
It helps when some of your best friends used to live there and can give you a pretty amazing to-do list. It’s even better when they decide to join you and show you their favorite spots in person (thanks Macey & Liz).
Kevin and I departed Oahu painstakingly early on Friday morning and arrived on Maui at 7am. From there we went to an amazing cafe in Kula called La Provence.
Once we finished our breakfast we headed upcountry to Alii Lavender Farms.
You pay a small $2.00 fee (with a local or military ID) before you enter the grounds but it was totally worth it. The property has multiple lavender farms as well as tropical gardens.
The shop at the entrance sells lovely lavender scones and lavender tea/coffee (if you go you MUST get one and drizzle lilikoi honey on top!)
After the lavender gardens we drove to Poli Poli State Park but it started to rain so we stopped at the top for a few moments between the showers before heading back down the mountain.
We drove back down to Kula and decided to go to the Surfing Goat Dairy farm. This is a great place to see if you’re looking to tour upcountry farms.
After we ate our fill of cheese we headed to Hosmer’s Grove on Haleakala to setup camp for the night. We wanted to catch the sunset from Haleakala Summit so once the clouds cleared we headed up to the summit.
When we reached the top the summit was a pleasant 46 degrees (call me spoiled, but it felt like it was below zero). We were above the clouds at an elevation of 10,023 ft. Despite the frigid cold it was absolutely stunning.
Once the sun set we headed back down to our campsite (where it was STILL too cold to be Hawaii) and went to straight to sleep.
Saturday morning we woke up at 5:20AM to see the sunrise at Haleakala before hiking down the Sliding Sands Trail in the crater.
We ended up doing 4 miles of the hike and it was absolutely breathtaking. It felt like we were on a different planet!
After the hike we went down to Paia to grab breakfast at Cafe De Amis and check out the kooky town. We were relieved to be back in 75 degree weather and checked out Baby Beach right outside of town before heading to Big Beach outside of Kihei.
Around mid afternoon we met up with Macey, Liz, Cal, and Joel and took advantage of a prime photo op near a newly bloomed sunflower field.
Then our group headed to a thousand peaks outside of Lahaina to set up camp.
There is honestly nothing better than camping with friends right on the beach with a bon fire and some cold brews.
Sunday morning we woke up and had Easter breakfast in Lahaina at Mala (if you are in Lahaina I would strongly suggest you check this place out!)
Afterwards, we went to an awesome beach called Slaughterhouse on the north west side of the island.
Once we had a couple hours of sun and sandy bottoms we drove up north and stopped at a few lookouts to take in the views.
Kevin and I didn’t fly out until Monday morning so we treated ourselves to a suite at the Marriott Ocean Club Resort and had dinner at Merriman’s.
If you are on Maui and want to eat at the best restaurant on island Merriman’s is THE place. Trust me.
After our amazing dinner we went back to the suite to relax before our early flight back to Oahu in the morning.
The trip was incredible and I can’t wait to go back in a few months! If you have any questions please feel free to comment! ?
Additionally, if you have more time to spend I recommend driving/camping on the infamous road to Hana! I did it on my first trip and while it’s long and weaving (car sick riders-beware!) you see SO much. The other activities we didn’t have time for were the Molokini snorkel tour- apparently it’s the best snorkeling on island.
