ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com is a website that not only says what it does in the name but does not give much about what it does away. Built on NVIDIA’s generative adversarial network (GAN) called StyleGAN, ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com uses artificial intelligence to creepily create stunningly lifelike human faces that do not actually exist.
How does ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com work?
ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com generates a new, completely unique human face everytime the website is opened or refreshed. Go ahead, try it. We’ll wait……..
The video above is a selection of some of the faces that ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com has created.
ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com was created by Philip Wang, a software engineer at Uber. Wang used the research released last year by Nvidia to create an near endless amount of fake portraits. The algorithm behind the site, Nvidia’s GAN, is trained on a huge dataset of real images to fabricate new examples. In a post on Facebook, Wang wrote:
“Each time you refresh the site, the network will generate a new facial image from scratch,”
Additionally, in a statement to Motherboard, Wang said:
“Most people do not understand how good AIs will be at synthesizing images in the future.”

Are there more websites like ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com?
ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com is not the only website that has popped up that uses Nvidia’s StyleGAN. Due to the nature of StyleGAN, the AI tool can generate almost any image (or set of images) once it has studied a dataset. Other examples of fake image websites include:
As you can see, the quality of the images varies dramatically but the images are still impressive non the less.
What is the future of realistic fake technology?
That is the millions dollar question. Website’s like ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com highlight the realistic fake technology, novelise it and make it palatable to people who are discovering it for the first time. The other websites based on StyleGAN (listed above) only add to that.
However, as the quality of synthetic video, speech, real-time face generation and other AI driven realistic fake technology, like deepfakes, evolve, it raises ethical questions as to the ways this technology can be used, or misused. The effect these technologies will have on trust is immense. Similar to one of the face mask scenes from a Mission Impossible movie, in the future, will we really be so quick to believe what we see on our screens?
