Super Bowl Sunday is almost here! The event is one of the most widely watched sporting spectacles across the globe each year. Pitting each year’s two best NFL teams against each other, the Super Bowl is almost always filled with tension, drama and moments of sporting greatness. How expensive are the ad?
Super Bowl ads have reportedly increased in price by 76% over the last 10 years. The cost for broadcasting an advert is roughly around $5 millon (this does not include the production costs).
Did you know how much food in consumed during the event?
It is estimated that 1.25 billion chicken wings and 11.2 million pounds of potatoes chips will be eaten during the game by spectators whilst 325.5 gallons of beer will be drunk.
When did they start using Roman numerals?
The game between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Colts in 1969 was the first time the league used Roman numerals and the official “Super Bowl” name. The Jets went on to beat the Colts 16-7 and Joe Namath continued on a path that would eventually lead him to the Hall of Fame. They use Roman numerals because the football season falls in two calendar years.

The Super Bowl is broadcast in 34 languages.

While most fans are transfixed on the players, the coaches are also widely celebrated. For Super Bowl XV, The Raiders’ Tom Flores, of Hispanic descent, became the first minority coach to win the game. In 2007, Tony Dungy became the first Black coach to win the Super Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts coach competed against his friend and protegé Lovie Smith, making them the first two Black coaches to lead the game.
