Ever wondered what music people in New York listen to the most? Perhaps you are curious to know how people’s listening habits differ between cities? Spotify have put together something any music fan (or analytical statistician) would find amazing.
With food, there are certain meals that you can buy almost anywhere, a pizza or burger for example. But… when people travel abroad, they don’t seek out what they have at home. They look for the food synonymous with the city/country they are in.
Similarly with music, whilst most the world over enjoys the top hits, different cities/countries would have different musical preferences.
After analysing approximately 20 billion listener/track relationships, Spotify has put together a Musical Map of playlists from cities around the world. Want to see what music people love listening to in Wigan, England? Now you can.
Go ahead, try it for yourself. Remember, you don’t only have to click the green cities. You can also click the light grew countries for an overview of each country’s distinctive, emerging, most popular and most viral music playlists.
From Spotify’s insights site, they say the following about these new playlists;
You can click any of nearly a thousand cities to hear a playlist of the music that is most distinctively enjoyed there.
What do we mean by “distinctive?” This is music that people in each city listen to quite a bit, which people in other cities also do not listen to very much. So it is, exactly, the music that makes them different from people everywhere else.
Whenever you want, your headphones can take you to hundreds of cities on this map — an interactive audiographic guide to how the world listens to music. Because this music represents music that over-indexes in these cities, it’s a great way to pluck local favorites from around the world and add the ones you like to Your Music in Spotify.
Each one of their distinctive city playlists are updated twice per month.
