With the NFL Combine now over, teams will be reevaluating their big boards. Some players moved up while others moved down. How far up or down depends on the team. While that may be case for several draft prospects, there’s one player who’s the clear cut number one overall prospect in this draft.
Saquon Barkley is the top prospect, regardless of team need or where each team picks. Barkley was already in the conversation for the number one overall pick before the NFL Combine, but now there’s no question it should be him. When you have a coach saying he’d punch himself in the nuts many times to draft you, that says quite a bit about you as a prospect.
You’d think the number one overall prospect would go number one overall. While it may be and should be the case, we’re not sure yet. The Cleveland Browns own the number one pick in the draft. As we all know, the Browns went 0-16 last season. Also as we all know, the Browns have had some of the worst play at quarterback for a long time. It’s because of the bad quarterback play that Barkley has competition for the number one overall pick in the draft.
It makes sense for the Browns to want a quarterback, but it doesn’t make sense to take a quarterback with their number one pick. Why you ask? Well, Cleveland also has the number four overall pick. When pick four comes around, Cleveland will have their choice of quarterbacks. The Giants may pick a quarterback second overall, but the Colts have Andrew Luck and won’t be taking a quarterback third. There are five quarterbacks considered to be first rounders, meaning the Browns will get to pick from the remaining four. Maybe the Giants don’t draft a quarterback. Maybe they draft a player like Quenton Nelson to protect Eli Manning, leaving the Browns with their choice of all five first round quarterback prospects.
Saquon Barkley is the best player in this draft, and there’s no way he lasts to pick four. 0% chance Barkley lasts that long. If the Browns don’t take him first, the Giants will take him second. Cleveland needs talent. If they want to maximize that talent, they take Barkley first overall and select their quarterback at pick four. Along with the first and fourth picks, Cleveland also has the 33rd, 35th, and 64th picks. Five picks in the first two rounds is incredible. With the picks they have, the Browns are set to have quite the draft haul, but what it really comes down to is who they select.
If the Browns select someone other than Saquon Barkley with the first overall pick, it’s literally the dumbest thing they could do in the draft. The potential they have to win the draft goes downhill right from the start. Here’s what they should do:
1st overall pick: Saquon Barkley
4th overall pick: Whichever quarterback they like the most
33rd and 35th overall picks: The top of the second round is full of borderline first rounders who didn’t go in the first for whatever reason. Take the best overall player, regardless of position. Your team needs talent, and with two major needs filled by two of the top players in the draft in the first round, you take whoever is the best Cleveland.
After an 0-16 season, the Browns are set up to have a very bright future if they play their cards right. Don’t make dumb decisions like you have in the past. Don’t trade back a thousand times like you’ve done before. Take the best players who are going to help you win instead of suffering through more 0,1, or 2 win seasons.
There’s only one smart decision when it comes to the number one pick. Saquon Barkley. Nobody else comes even close to comparing. Do it right this time Cleveland. It’s about time you did.
Comment your thoughts on who you think the Cleveland Browns should select with their two first round picks!
