MSM stands for methyl-sulfonyl-methane, which is sulfur. MSM is an organic white sulfur powder, which comes from the ocean and is water soluble, as is Vitamin C with which it works synergistically (together, to produce an enhanced result) in our bodies.
“Sulfur is vital to the creation and regeneration of the body’s tissues. It is found in every cell in the body. Approximately half of the sulfur in your body is concentrated in the muscles, skin and bones [as is collagen, the main component of connective tissue in the extracellular matrix throughout our bodies],” as noted by Dr. Denise De Monte. According to Dr. Mercola’s study, MSM Health Benefits, “When sulfur is in short supply, the cell wall hardens, and the cells lose their elasticity. The transport proteins of the [cell] membrane become locked, and the membranes become less permeable. This results in a reduced transport of oxygen and nutrients into the cells as well as reduced excretion of waste products from within the cells… Reduced vitality and eventually degenerative diseases are the result.”
Minerals are needed for the absorption and utilization of vitamins and enzymes… and oxygen is vital to all cells.
There are (blood) tests to determine which nutrients each of us is deficient in. However, as the natural Sulfur Cycle has been depleted, worldwide, due to farming techniques… and thus our soil AND the plants therein have been depleted of a number of micronutrients such as sulfur which our bodies need… it would be highly unlikely that any of us are not deficient in sulfur (or iodine or magnesium… perhaps zinc or selenium). As sulfur is so close to oxygen on the Periodic Table and it functions… particularly in the presence of abundant Vitamin C… to carry oxygen to all the cells of the body… I am inclined to call it “the master micronutrient” as glutathione has been called the master antioxidant.
Cell walls are made permeable (“soft”) by organic sulfur,* pure, unadulterated sulfur with NO additives, fillers, binders or caking agents… which allows for absorption of other nutrients, oxygen and amino acids. Cell walls then open to release toxins, waste and heavy metals. And, too, Dr. Stanley Jacob, M.D., who was head of the Portland, Oregon Pain Clinic for many years, a professor at the Oregon Health Services University and was a pioneer in the use of DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) as well as Sulfur. Dr. Jacob, who in the 1990s, saw thousands of patients who suffered from chronic pain (though his work in the Clinic was ignored by conventional, western medicine which is focused on reporting on “innovative drugs” put forth by multi-national pharmaceutical companies) learned as he details in his book which was co-authored by Dr. Ronald M. Lawrence, M.D., the founder of the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Association of Headaches, that as sulfur passes through the cellular membranes of the body, including the skin… it has many benefits such as:
- It is analgesic (relieves pain)
- It reduces inflammation
- It dilates blood vessels and as a vasodilator increases blood flow
- It alters the cross-linking process in collagen and…
- It has had an immune normalizing effect in some autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and scleroderma
Dr. Jacob’s work is detailed in two books… the first being “The Miracle of MSM – The Natural Solution for Pain” in which he speaks of these results being obtained from the consistent use of sulfur (MSM) topically (as a gel) as well as orally. Says Dr. Jacob on page 212 of his first groundbreaking book: “As someone who has treated scleroderma patients for many years, I have seen MSM make a huge difference in many cases. I don’t think it puts people into remission [though… reading some of his case histories I’m not sure why he says that], but it has the potential to allow patients to function at a more productive and comfortable level in life, and with less pain. My opinion: There is reason to believe that *organic, unadulterated Sulfur (MSM) which really may be considered a food, not a supplement, has been as beneficial as LDN [Low Dose Naltrexone, a drug] has been found to be in relieving pain by another New York M.D., Dr. Bihari.
As Dr. Denise De Monte of the De Monte Centre also noted, “Starting in the 1930s, researchers reported arthritis sufferers were deficient in sulfur, and that restoring sulfur levels provided significant benefits to these patients.” However, “it wasn’t until 1979, however, that Dr. Stanley Jacob, M.D. discovered MSM while doing research at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland Oregon. A surgeon and former instructor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Jacob is considered the world’s foremost expert on its research and clinical applications. He used MSM with over 18,000 patients in his practice for 25 years. Patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle soreness and muscle pain all benefited significantly from MSM.”
