Every woman wants her hair to be silky and shiny, which is why we purchase all sorts of products that we believe will help us achieve these results.

Some prefer going to beauty salons to have hair treatment procedures, but not everyone can afford to do this.

Do you have to spend a lot of money to get a quality product that will actually do what it promises?

More specifically, is an expensive shampoo actually more effective than an affordable shampoo?

Hair Structure

If you did not already know, the majority of the hair on your head is dead, thus it has no nerves or muscles.

The only alive part of the hair is its bulb, which is located in the dermis. Aside from this, a hair fiber consists of cuticle, cortex, and medulla. A cuticle, a top layer of a fiber is made of keratin cells that overlap each other as a roof shingles.

This is exactly what makes your locks shiny. If there are gaps between cells, then the result will be opposite.

Shampoo’s Purpose

Back in the day, people used to wash their hair with the help of different products: water, herb potion, but the most popular was soap. However, it had many drawbacks, including white raid after use and head skin dryness.

The situation had changed when the shampoo was discovered in 1903 by a well-known good cheap shampoo brand called Schwarzkopf. Today it is still a top brand that produces the best budget shampoo on the market.

However, shampoo’s main purpose, no matter how expensive or affordable, is to wash away the oil from the skin on your head.

Shampoo Ingredients

In order to make shampoo last longer, manufacturers have to add a mixture of different chemicals like parabens, surfactants, silicone and citric acid. Some of them are in charge of foaming, another for moisturizing or cleaning, etc.

The problem is that sometimes when these chemicals get mixed together, their functions can be neutralized. That is why it is necessary to add extra chemical elements. However, good shampoo also needs oils, moisturizers, proteins and other useful elements.

You can find a ton of them in a conditioner, but shampoo contains them as well.

Sometimes to sound more natural, brands will add in different extracts, but, in fact, these are only words. The reality is that your cleaning liquid consists of surfactants by 50%.

However, if you wish to find a product with mild surfactants, you should look at those with Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate or Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate. These chemicals do not harm the skin of your head and hair as well.

Some of affordable hair care brands that contain these ingredients are Avalon Organics, Biotene H-24sBabySpa, Alba Botanica, and Nature’s Gate.

Expensive Shampoo vs. Affordable Shampoo

If you look at the ingredient list of the well-known Head & Shoulders shampoo produced by Proctor & Gamble, you may find such ingredients as Agua, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Glycol Distearat, Dimethicone etc.

The famous Johnson Baby shampoo, which is made for children consists of the same Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate (a bit milder surfactant), Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride etc.

A more expensive shampoo by Jacques Dessange, a famous French hairdresser and the owner of the luxurious salons, also contains the popular chemicals Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Dimethicone, cetyl alcohol, sodium chloride and other chemicals.

Basically, no matter if it is cheap or priceyshampoos can still contain harmful surfactants so you have to search for products that do not contain them.

The concentration of the surfactants depends on the type of hair it is made for. That is why its level is higher if the product is made for oily hair, and lower if it is for a dry one.

They differ only in terms of proportions used and the quality of the raw material.

Some shampoos may have a mixture of chemicals that could cause issues like allergy, dryness, etc., which is another reason to stay away from these chemicals.

How can you choose the perfect shampoo for your hair? Only by trial and error.

But as we have learned, you do not necessarily need to go spending a fortune on shampoo to get good results. Just make sure that the shampoo that you choose does not contain any harsh chemicals.

Do not forget that the cost of any product includes the cost of advertising as well, thus many famous expensive brands invest a lot in it.

What is more, the package of the product also plays a great role in price rate. If you do not chase the hypes around luxurious brands with expensive packaging, you can find many affordable shampoos that will do great things for your hair.
