The new year is fully upon us and with it comes a wide variety of possibilities. This year is shaping up to be a promising one for technology. Artificial intelligence will continue to permeate our society, smartphones will only get smarter and more advanced, and big data is set to have a great year. As a data scientist, you must be familiar with big data. It is simply a major part of the job. With that being said, I just wanted to highlight a few impressive ways that major corporations are using big data to improve their products, services and even the world.

But first, what is big data? In essence, big data is a new-age term for a decades-old process. Big data is the general term for large amounts of data that can then be analyzed, processed and used to propose solutions to various problems.

So how are companies using big data?

Google

Does it come as a surprise that one of the world’s largest tech companies is using big data? Probably not. In fact, they are probably the world’s largest user of big data. However, the method in which they are applying this information is really quite astounding. Google is working closely with the American Centers for Disease Control in order to determine possible areas of widespread outbreak. How? By collecting the search terms related to health and sickness. With this information, Entire outbreaks can be suppressed before they even begin.

Nike

The world-famous athletic wear company is utilizing big data in order to create more sustainable designs and techniques. One such technique involves a new kind of dye that does not require any water.

GE

If you’re like most of the world, you hate the process of flying. Security checkpoints, baggage fees and flight delays and cancellations are enough to make even the most sane man go crazy. Luckily, big data is trying to save you some hassle. Utilizing big data, some companies are monitoring their fleet of aircraft much closer; this information can provide valuable insight into aircraft maintenance and prevent flights from cancellation or delays.

Big data has been around for quite some time and it shows no signs of slowing down. As we venture further into the future, we can all fully expect to see even more companies utilize big data in positive ways.
