We know that superhero films such as Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Aquaman are coming out in 2018. Still, one superhero film in 2018 that, for me, is going under the radar is Venom. Production for this film started in October and it is meant to be the first film in Sony’s Marvel Universe. From what we know so far, it will be separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film has already added talent in the form of Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams. Now, another addition looks likely.
Apparently, revered actor Woody Harrelson is in discussions with Sony to join Venom. If this happens, then he would be reunited with director Ruben Fleischer who he worked with on Zombieland. Harrelson has already had a pretty busy 2017 with appearances in films such as War for the Planet of the Apes, The Glass Castle, Shock and Awe and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The latter of those films is doing very well when it comes to award recognition.
Harrelson looks like he will have an equally busy and impressive 2018 when it comes to his filmography. Indeed, he is already set to star in the upcoming Star Wars film titled Solo: A Star Wars Story. Details on his character in Solo as well as Venom are still unknown to us. According to Variety, sources claim that his character in Venom may be “a henchman of sorts”. That is all we know so far about the potential role he could play in this Spider-Man spin-off that is separate from the MCU.
The mystery surrounding Woody Harrelson’s role in Venom is not exactly shocking news. Nowadays, details about most blockbuster films are kept under wrap for as long as possible. This is especially true when it comes to superhero films as well as a film such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Still, Venom is going beyond the norm when it comes to secrecy. Throughout its pre-production, details were extremely sparse. It is in production now and all we know about Venom is that Tom Hardy will play the lead role as Eddie Brock/Venom.
Indeed, we still do not know for sure who Michelle Williams is playing in the film. With Venom set to release less than a year from now, more details are surely on the horizon soon. Unless Venom gets delayed, I see no reason why this should not happen. Nonetheless, Woody Harrelson is a great addition to the cast if they can tie him down to a contract.
Truly, he has given fantastic performances throughout his career. I have no doubt that he would be great in a film that Sony is under a lot of pressure to get right. Certainly, Venom is beloved by many fans of Spider-Man and Marvel. On paper, Sony are getting the cast decisions for this film right. We just have to hope that the story in Venom matches the calibre of the cast.
