The Men in Black franchise has had its ups and downs. More importantly, it was a franchise that was seemingly dead after Men in Black 3. I personally thought that Men in Black 3 was okay. Still, I have never been a huge fan of the franchise. The first Men in Black was entertaining but Men in Black 2 and, to some extent, Men in Black 3 did not live up to the original.

However, rumours of a reboot have been circling for a while and it looks like it is finally happening. Bizarrely, a crossover with the 21 Jump Street franchise was being seriously considered at one point in time. However, that is not going to happen now. The reboot of Men in Black will be a standalone venture and the news is it may have its director already.

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith in Men in Black

F. Gary Gray

According to a report in Deadline, Sony Pictures is in discussions with F. Gary Gray to direct this new Men in Black film. Gray has already had huge box office success with The Fate of the Furious and has achieved critical acclaim with films such as Straight Outta Compton and Friday. In this sense, he seems like a very good fit for this new Men in Black film which needs to be a critical and financial hit to successfully relaunch this franchise.

Sadly, it looks as though Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not reprise their roles. The relationship they had was a big reason why the first Men in Black was so entertaining. However, those days have gone and we will not see them again in this franchise even though this reboot is likely to take place in the same universe as the original films.

F. Gary Gray

From that perspective, you should see this new Men in Black film as a mix between a reboot and a sequel. This is quite similar to what Jurassic World was for the Jurassic Park franchise. Hopefully, we will get an official announcement about F. Gary Gray’s appointment soon as well as additions to the cast in the following months.
