A few days ago, I spoke about the story concerning Quentin Tarantino and Star Trek. This story informed us of the possibility of Tarantino directing a Star Trek film. Clearly, before the story broke, no one ever expected this to be a reality. Certainly, the two operate in completely different worlds. Tarantino is an independent filmmaker who lives by his own rules whereas Star Trek is an established franchise.
Hence, Star Trek may not be suited for someone like Quentin Tarantino whose films have always been outrageous and unconfined. For me, I am very intrigued with Tarantino being involved with Star Trek. This is because he could provide a fresh take on the franchise. It seems like the executives at Paramount Pictures feel the same as more developments about this project have been revealed.
An R-Rated Star Trek Film
According to Deadline, Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek film (if it happens) will be R-rated. Additionally, a front-runner has emerged to write this film in the form of Mark L. Smith who has writing credits on films such as The Hole and The Revenant. To work on a Star Trek film will be great for his career. Still, it is not confirmed that he has the job so things could still change in this regard.
One thing that will not change is the R-rating. Apparently, this was a condition needed for Quentin Tarantino to be involved in the project. Both J. J. Abrams and Paramount agreed to this and it will be a first for this franchise. Certainly, no Star Trek film in the past has ever had an R-rating. They have always been films designed to appeal to all age demographics but you could argue that the franchise needs something different. This new approach could be a good move, especially from a financial perspective.
Underwhelming Returns At The Box Office
You can absolutely make a case that recent films in the franchise have not provided stellar box office results. Perhaps a different take on the franchise with Quentin Tarantino at the helm can shake things up with Star Trek. One thing we can say with a lot of certainty is that this whole situation is rapidly developing. This film may not happen soon due to Tarantino’s other commitments but more news in the near future is possible.
