A Wrinkle in Time is a film which has a lot going for it. It is based on a book that is beloved by many and has an incredibly gifted director in Ava DuVernay to bring this source material to life. Additionally, the film has a cast with talent such as Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon. Certainly, both of them have individually given fantastic performances in great films and I cannot wait to see them perform together in A Wrinkle in Time. They discussed the importance of the film to journalists who attended a set visit in February 2017 and the comments they made get me even more excited to see this fantasy film.
Here is what Oprah had to say to Collider on what the film means to her:
“I do not think of it as a kid’s film. I think of it as a film for generations to come, and it will live on in the wisdom empowerment energy field for people, in the same way that [The Wizard of] Oz has […] I just think the message is so timely. It’s wonderful that there is a heroine in it. It’s great that we’re all knockout dressers, as the angelic beings, and that we’re female, but I really do think it’s a story for everybody. Everyone who I’ve encountered, who actually grew up with the book, has just become so excited and weepy and a little cray over it.”
Reese Witherspoon also had something to say to Collider about how important A Wrinkle in Time will be:
“I get emotional, thinking how little kids going to the theater will actually see a character and an actor that looks like them. That will make them think it’s possible. And also, they’ll see women who are heroes, who are all different sizes and all different races. Women are the heroes of a lot of kids’ lives, and to see that properly represented is way overdue and exciting.”
The passion from Oprah and Reese in regards to this film and its potential impact is evident and inspiring to see. I always want fantasy films to succeed and I hope A Wrinkle in Time lives up to its potential.
