Murder on the Orient Express was arguably one of the most anticipated films of 2017. Obviously, the film is based on a novel that is beloved by many and there was a good amount of curiosity to see whether this adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel would do the source material justice. Additionally, there was interest about whether this film could exceed the quality of the 1974 film of the same name.
Everything pointed towards the possibility of this happening when you consider the brilliant talent that this film had. Kenneth Branagh would direct this film and star as Hercule Poirot and he had a brilliant cast to work with that included names such as Daisy Ridley, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfieffer, Josh Gad, Dame Judi Dench and Penelope Cruz among others.
The Reception Towards Murder on the Orient Express
Despite all of the great things that this film had going for it, Murder on the Orient Express was not the universal hit that everyone hoped it would be. While it is a financial success due to the fact that it has so far made $149.8 million worldwide on a $55 million budget, it got mixed reviews from the critics and there was no guarantee that 20th Century Fox would move ahead with a sequel.
A Sequel To Murder on the Orient Express Is Happening
However, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox is working on a sequel to Murder on the Orient Express in the form of an adaptation of another Agatha Christie novel called Death on the Nile. Additionally, Kenneth Branagh is expected to reprise his role as Poirot and direct the sequel too. While no contract has been signed yet, it is highly likely that Branagh will return for the sequel.
Seeing as Murder on the Orient Express has made a good deal of money at the box office, it makes sense from a business perspective that a sequel is happening. This is sure to delight those who liked the film and love Agatha Christie’s work in general because Death of the Nile is one of Christie’s most popular novels.
The story of that novel focuses on Poirot who is on vacation yet stumbles into a deadly adventure once again that involves high society, a love triangle and, obviously, murder. No release date has been set for this sequel to Murder on the Orient Express.
