To say that the DCEU is in a bit of a mess at the moment is an understatement. Justice League, which you know I think is a terrible film if you read my review, has had an awful run at the box office. Indeed, what was supposed to be DC’s equivalent to The Avengers will not make $1 billion worldwide. It is not even going to cross the $700 million mark worldwide. Clearly, something within the DCEU has to change if Warner Bros. wants it to be successful both critically and financially.
Warner Bros. recently released a slate of upcoming films in the DCEU. But, let’s be honest, no one really expects this slate to remain the same. Development of future films in the DCEU has been in flux depending on a variety of factors whether its director’s dropping out and/or a new script being written. Nothing ever seems to be stable with the DCEU, so much so that we find out that some films we never knew existed are in development.
Margot Robbie Back As Harley Quinn?
This was certainly the case when Margot Robbie announced that she was developing a solo Harley Quinn film. We knew that Harley Quinn would be back for Suicide Squad 2. Yet, her proclamation that she was developing a solo film for that character was a surprise. In an interview with Collider, where she also talked about her role as Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, she gave an update about when we will see her play Harley Quinn again:
“I think we’re very close, actually. Everyone has been working really hard, myself included, to get Harley back on screen. I think it will be quite soon. There’s so much more to explore with her. I can’t wait! I hope next year, but with bigger films, it takes a lot longer to get it all up and running”.
While I have not seen Suicide Squad, I have seen a lot of DC fans on social media say that they liked Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn. Even those who were not the biggest fans of Suicide Squad did not see Harley Quinn as the worst element of that film. Hence, if Harley Quinn is to make a return to the DCEU soon, I do not believe a lot of people would be in uproar about it. Whether it happens anytime soon is another thing. Truly, I cannot confidently predict anything when it comes to the DCEU anymore.
