A few figures in the film industry are synonymous with the Star Wars franchise. Clearly, as the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas will always be associated with the property. Lawrence Kasdan is another whose impact on Star Wars is undeniable. As a co-writer on Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he stamped his authority on the franchise.
For me, John Williams always comes to mind when thinking about the most important figures in the Star Wars franchise. Star Wars would not be what it is if not for the brilliant work that John Williams has done in the episodic saga. The music he has composed for this franchise is iconic.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
We now know that John Williams’ involvement with Star Wars is set to continue. I guess some things never change. In an interview with Variety, John Williams confirmed that he will write and compose the main theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story. John Powell will still compose the score for the film. This continues the trend set by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story where new composers are being used for Star Wars films separate from the episodic saga.
This is what John Williams had to say on the matter:
“The present plan is that I’m writing a theme for Han Solo, and John Powell is going to write the score, which he’ll do brilliantly […] His assignment is something I’m very happy about […] What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy […] John [Powell] will complete the score. He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear”.
This Is Great News
We all know that John Williams is not going to be around forever to compose music for films. That is the sad reality of life. Still, while he is still working, it would be foolish not to use his talents. That is why I am delighted he is involved in Solo. I cannot wait to see what John Williams and John Powell do when it comes to the score for Solo.
Hopefully, another memorable Star Wars score will be created in addition to an iconic theme for an iconic character like Han Solo. After the troubled production of Solo, it is nice to get some great news regarding this film. I pray that we will get more good news in the future.
