Undoubtedly, one of the many brilliant aspects of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the emergence and performance of Daisy Ridley. Her portrayal of Rey was fantastic and quite extraordinary given how, before this role, she had only appeared in some short films and television shows. Obviously, there was a lot of eagerness to see Daisy Ridley continue to play this great, mysterious character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and beyond.
Is Daisy Ridley Done After Episode IX?
However, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Ridley shed some light on her experience with Star Wars so far and she stated that she might be done with playing Rey once Star Wars: Episode IX is completed and released in 2019. In regards to playing Rey in the future, Ridley said:
“No. For me, I didn’t really know what I was signing on to. I hadn’t read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, ‘Awesome.’ Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now”.
“No. No, no, no. I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it’s three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out”.
My Thoughts On Daisy Ridley’s Comments
To be honest, I feel as though everyone is making a big of a deal out of nothing with these comments. Clearly, I think it is safe to assume that Daisy Ridley is not focused on playing Rey in the immediate short-term after Episode IX. However, I do not feel as though Lucasfilm themselves will be focused on making more episodic adventures in the Star Wars universe straight after Episode IX.
With the announcement of a new trilogy being helmed by Rian Johnson, it seems like Lucasfilm is keen on telling new stories in new time periods after Episode IX rather than continuing to tell stories in the main saga. Hence, it could be a case where both parties agree on leaving the character of Rey alone for a while after Episode IX ends. Plus, Daisy Ridley does not rule out coming back as Rey decades in the future just like the original cast have done for the sequel trilogy. On this point, she said:
“Who knows? I honestly feel like the world may end in the next 30 years, so, if in 30 years we are not living underground in a series of interconnected cells … then sure. Maybe. But again, it’s like, who knows. Because the thing I thought was so amazing, was people really wanted it. And it was done by people who really love it […] How old will I be? 55. Fuck, I can’t think that far ahead”.
So, for now, while it seems unlikely that Daisy Ridley will play Rey after Episode IX in the short-term, I would absolutely not rule out that she will return to play Rey sometime in the distant future. I feel like people who are saying that it is an absolute definite that Daisy Ridley will never play Rey again are being quite over-dramatic. Besides, if she wants to focus on other projects and Lucasfilm wants to tell new stories with new characters in new time periods in the Star Wars universe, then both parties will be happy in the short-term to do this.
