While he would be the first person to admit that he is not the most talented actor on the planet, no one can deny how much of a presence Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has as an actor. He is one of the biggest movie stars working today for a reason and, in my eyes, he saved the Fast and Furious franchise.
Before his introduction in Fast 5, that franchise was going nowhere and his role as Luke Hobbs in the most recent instalments of this film series has been immensely entertaining. This made the news that came out this week all the more devastating. Comments made by Dwayne Johnson strongly suggested that we may not see him return for Fast and Furious 9.
Fast and Furious 9
While he is planning to reprise his role as Hobbs alongside Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham, in the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw, it does not look likely that we will see Dwayne Johnson return for the next instalment in the main series. Rumblings have been around for some time about a feud between Dwayne Johnson and co-star Vin Diesel and Johnson confirmed, in his interview with Rolling Stone, that he had severe differences with Vin Diesel.
Here is what he had to say about Vin Diesel, Hobbs and Shaw and Fast and Furious 9:
“Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer, and what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating. It took me some time, but I’m grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.”
“I’m not quite sure [about Fast and Furious 9]. Right now I’m concentrating on making the spinoff [Hobbs and Shaw] as good as it can be, but I wish him all the best, and I harbor no ill will there, just because of the clarity we have…Actually, you can erase that last part about ‘no ill will.’ We’ll just keep it with the clarity.”
