Creed is regarded by many as one of the best films in the Rocky franchise. A lot of praise was directed toward the film for its performances, storytelling, and directing. Ryan Coogler was the director for Creed and I can say for myself that I was very impressed with his work in Creed. Obviously, the hope was that Ryan Coogler would return for Creed 2 but this is not the case. Once we knew this, it was expected that Sylvester Stallone would be the director.
A New Director For Creed 2 Has Been Announced
We have recently found out that Steven Caple Jr., not Sylvester Stallone, will be the director for Creed 2. After the original belief amongst film pundits and fans that Stallone would return to the director’s chair, he had this to say on Instagram:
“The character of Adonis Creed reflects this generation, and I believe it is important to have a director who is part of it , that is why I think we are Lucky to have Stephen Caple ,Jr A wonderful new talent take over The directorial chores and make the story as relatable as possible… He and Michael B Jordan will deliver a knockout!”.
We knew that Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, who received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars for his performance as Rocky in Creed, would return for Creed 2. However, the announcement of Steven Caple Jr. as director is a surprise. The main reason why this is a surprise is because he is relatively unknown. Apparently, he was handpicked by both Stallone and Jordan. Yet, Caple Jr.’s only film of note to date is The Land which not many people saw.
I Like The Decision
However, we have to remember that Ryan Coogler was a relatively unknown director before Creed. Indeed, his only film of note before Creed was Fruitvale Station. Hence, I believe that we should not be too hasty with our judgements when it comes to this announcement. Moreover, I appreciate how an unknown director is being given a chance with a high-profile film like Creed 2. It could launch his career to new heights. It worked with Ryan Coogler and it can work again and Caple Jr. himself seems thrilled with the prospect:
“It’s an honor to be a part of such an iconic franchise and to work with such great collaborators. Mike, Sly, and Tessa are extraordinarily talented and bring something special to today’s culture. I look forward to joining the family and continuing the precedent set by this franchise’s alumni of incredible filmmakers”.
Michael B. Jordan gave his own thoughts about this story on Twitter:
Excited for Coogler to hand over the reins to Steven Caple, Jr. – our director for Creed 2!… https://t.co/P3z5V9eJYH
