While Common is probably most well-known for his success as a musician, he has also made his mark in the film industry with roles in movies such as Selma and John Wick: Chapter 2. He also has starring roles in upcoming films All About Nina and Eve, both of which he discussed in an interview with Collider.
All About Nina
Here is what Common had to say on the thoughts he had after reading the script for All About Nina:
“When I read it, I felt like it was just a unique voice coming through for Nina, for Rafe, and for all of the characters. It had things that were funny, where you just laugh, and then there was things about the story that really break your heart and make you cry.”
“Rafe, as a character, was so colorful and so dynamic that I was very enthused to play him because you don’t see relationships like the one between Rafe and Nina in film, and you don’t always see men showing the aspects that Rafe showed, which was a vulnerability.”
“He’s just a solid guy. He’s still working on himself and acknowledging that, but wants to be there for someone. It really was a great character to play.”
Common also spoke about the movie Eve which he stars alongside Jessica Chastain in and this is what he had to say on the character he plays in Eve:
“He’s the boyfriend to Jessica Chastain’s character’s sister, and he’s a little complicated. He’s a good, sensitive guy, but he also has a gambling addiction. I’m looking forward to getting into that. When I get to play these characters, it teaches me about other people.”
“You definitely strip your judgment about a lot of things. I just played a black police officer in this movie, called The Hate U Give, and it gave me an understanding of what policemen could be thinking.”
“It didn’t change my way of thinking, when it comes to black and brown people being shot down in the streets, but it did make me say, ‘Man, police officers do some tough work.’ To get them into a space where they don’t feel at war with black and brown people takes a lot.”
