Despite receiving a lot of negative critical reception, Bright has been somewhat of a success for Netflix. Indeed, the streaming service asserted that Bright was watched by eleven million in its first weekend of release. Even though the reviews were negative, enough viewership was generated for Netflix to believe that turning Bright into a franchise makes financial sense.

A Bright Sequel Is Coming

Hence, it comes as no surprise that Netflix has officially announced that a sequel to Bright will happen. Will Smith and Joel Edgerton are set to reprise their roles from the first film. Additionally, David Ayer will be coming back to direct the sequel. Ayer, who directed films such as Suicide Squad, Fury and End of Watch, will also write the sequel to BrightMax Landis wrote the screenplay for Bright but will not be returning for the sequel in any capacity.

Joel Edgerton Bright

This comes as no surprise given the recent allegations of sexual assault and harassment levied against him. Still, I do not feel as though Max Landis is a huge loss. David Ayer has proved that, in addition to being a good director, he has some writing chops too. He wrote the screenplays for Fury and End of Watch which I thought were very good films. He also has writing credits on films such as Training Day, The Fast and the Furious and U-571. David Ayer is more than capable to write the sequel to Bright.

Netflix Is Confident

Clearly, Netflix is putting a lot of faith in the Bright franchise to be a profitable venture. As a company making billions in revenue each year, Netflix can take the risk. Speaking for myself, I have no real desire to watch Bright and I am not excited for a sequel. Nonetheless, it is evident that an audience exists for this franchise. In that sense, I am pleased that a sequel to a film which some people liked will be made. No release date has been announced yet for the sequel to Bright.
