Star Wars is an unstoppable force at this moment in time. Financially, it is a juggernaut. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Last Jedi all made well over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. All of these films were well received by critics and, for the most part, by Star Wars fans too.
Clearly, Lucasfilm would be wise to continue making Star Wars films in the foreseeable future. Rian Johnson is already developing a new Star Wars trilogy separate from the episodic saga. Now, we have some more news about the future of the films in the Star Wars franchise.
Benioff & Weiss
Lucasfilm have announced that David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the showrunners of Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new Star Wars film series. These new films will be separate from both the episodic saga and Rian Johnson’s new trilogy. Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, had this to say on the news:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting”.
Game of Thrones’ Benioff & Weiss writing and producing new Star Wars films. I do not think I have ever heard a better statement. I am delighted by this news. Lucasfilm continues to add an abundance of talent to its filmmaking projects. I cannot wait to hear more details about what Benioff & Weiss will work on and who will direct these films that they will develop.
Ava DuVernay, Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve and Ryan Coogler are some names that come to mind when I think of directors I want to see work on a Star Wars film. Still, for now, we should be happy with the news that the people behind what, at the end of its run, could be the greatest television show of all time are involved with the making of new Star Wars films. Benioff & Weiss had this to say on the opportunity that has been given to them:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete”.
