While the Golden Globes should not be taken seriously as prestigious awards, the award show itself is very entertaining. Something memorable usually happens at the Golden Globes. Yet, the 2017 Oscars were clear winners when it came to shocking moments last year. That Best Picture fiasco still makes me laugh to this day. Still, the ceremonies at the Golden Globes are always good fun. Well, the 2018 Golden Globes have come and gone. Hence, we should discuss the winners at the Golden Globes as well as the notable events of the night.
When it came to the film awards, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Lady Bird were the big winners. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won the award for Best Screenplay and Best Picture – Drama. Moreover, Francis McDormand won Best Actress – Drama for her performance and Best Supporting Actor went to Sam Rockwell for his role in the film. Lady Bird won the award for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. Additionally, Saoirse Ronan won Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for her role in Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age film.
Remarkably, despite the fact that Lady Bird won the award in the Best Actress and Best Picture in its respective categories, Greta Gerwig did not get nominated for Best Director. Now, I have not yet seen Lady Bird for myself so I cannot comment on the quality of the film. Still, you would have thought that the film would be in contention for a Best Director nomination based on its other nominations. It was a surprise that Greta Gerwig was not nominated.
Natalie Portman made a hilarious dig at the fact that the Best Director nominees were all male. The award for Best Director went to Guillermo del Toro for his work on The Shape of Water. That film also won the award for Best Original Score. Best Actress – Drama went to Sally Hawkins for her lead performance in The Shape of Water. Other notable winners at the 2018 Golden Globes include James Franco. He won the award for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy for his performance as Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist.
In the world of television, it was a great night for Big Little Lies. This show was a smash hit for HBO and it got a lot of love at the 2018 Golden Globes. Indeed, it won the award for Best Limited Series. Also, the excellent performance given by Nicole Kidman in the show meant that she won for Best Actress in a Limited Series.
Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her work in Big Little Lies. Fellow cast member Alexandar Skarsgard won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series. Shows such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Handmaid’s Tale also did very well. In fact, The Handmaid’s Tale won the award for Best Television Series – Drama while The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won the Musical or Comedy equivalent of that award.
Oprah and #TIMESUP
Still, the main thing people were talking about when it came to the 2018 Golden Globes was the fantastic speech given by Oprah Winfrey. She was accepting the Cecil B. DeMille award and her acceptance speech was one for the ages. It was certainly in keeping with a lot of the acceptance speeches at the 2018 Golden Globes.
Indeed, a running theme throughout the night was the addressing of the sexual harassment/assault allegations which have been brought to the forefront recently. The #MeToo and #TIMESUP movements were at the very heart of the 2018 Golden Globes and rightly so. All of the individuals who tackled these very emotionally charged matters did so with real grace. The speech given by Oprah was the highlight of them all. Indeed, it was so inspirational that a groundswell of support for a Presidential run by Oprah has been established. Still, whatever happens, Oprah’s speech at the 2018 Golden Globes will have an impact which extends beyond the film industry.
