The Film Independent Spirit Awards have been a great tool to use when predicting which films are going to do well at the Oscars. Certainly, the voting bodies for these awards are very similar and the Film Independent Spirit Awards are a celebration of the best films in independent filmmaking. As we know, independent films usually do very well at the Oscars and we only have to look at a film like Moonlight to see this.
Indeed, Moonlight won the award for Best Picture as well as Best Screenplay at the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards. More importantly, the last four Best Picture winners at the Film Independent Spirit Awards have gone to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Consequently, it is widely expected that the nominees and winners at the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards will more or less sync up with the 2018 Oscars. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at which films have the honour of being recognised by the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Call Me By Your Name and Get Out
Regarded by many film critics as being amongst the best films of 2017, Call Me By Your Name and Get Out now have award recognition by garnering the most nominations at the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Call Me By Your Name has six nominations while Get Out has five nominations and both films have been nominated for Best Picture as well as being nominated for Best Director and Best Actor.
Call Me By Your Name has been receiving critical acclaim since its debut at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year while Jordan Peele’s Get Out has been widely tipped to receive award recognition ever since it was released back in March 2017. Hence, it makes sense why both films have been recognised to the degree that they have by the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Other Films Nominated
Other independent films such as Lady Bird, Ingrid Goes West, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and I, Tonya have also been nominated in more than one category at the 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Still, Call Me By Your Name and Get Out are the big winners in terms of nominations and do not be surprised if those films as well as the others mentioned above achieve similar feats at the 2018 Oscars.
