Say Cheese!

Ever heard the photographer shout, “say cheese!”. If you have then well and good, if you haven’t, let me tell you a fact; when you say cheese, you teeth are shown and you appear to be smiling. Sometimes photographers also say,” Smile please!” , followed by your smile. Smile is an expression we take for granted, we don’t really value it unless we see the person we love without a smile. Have you experienced this, that your partner, kid or someone you love is sad or upset and you tell them, “at least smile”. It forms a very important part of our personality.

Sometimes, we meet a person for the first time, and later we say, “ yes, he seemed a sullen person, didn’t even smile a bit”. In some cultures smiling is considered a sign of leniency and of weak character also, therefore girls in certain community are told not to smile publicly or laugh loudly. It might also happen, when sometimes you dislike a person and the person comes and starts talking to you and you start forcing a smile on yourself , because you don’t really want to smile at that point of time. So, the easiest way is to fake a smile.

I’m very sure, nobody must have taught you to smile but today we are going to learn the different type of smiles and their meaning. But before we move ahead, I request you to click a picture of yourself with no smile at all. Just keep that picture in your phone and start reading, and at last we would click another picture. So, let us look at type of smiles, you need to avoid:

1.      Hospitality Smile

This is a kind of smile, which you may come across when you go to the hotel/ restaurant/airport etc. When you meet them, you see them smiling but you don’t feel it. SO, just the stretching of lips and showing off teeth would not really qualify as a smile.

2.      Pursed lips smile

This is the smile which is usually exchanged when someone is just not in a mood to smile, but still chooses to force himself/herself to smile at the other person. This, by the way look way horrible than not smiling at all. So, you are requested to not smile like this.

3.      Fake smile

Little different from pursed smile, this type of smile actually looks like a real smile. The major difference is it does not last long as a real smile. It vanishes within 2 seconds. This type of smile has to be avoided , especially when you are about to meet someone you don’t like.

4.      One sided smile

Have you ever experienced it, when a person smiles at you with only one side of lips, but you don’t really feel nice about it? It is because, the person is exhibiting an emotion called as contempt, which means, either he/she is feeling superior to you, or feeling you are inferior to them or may be not accepting your point.

So, these are the four type of smiles you need to avoid, in order to make a good rapport and a great impression. Having said that, you should know something about the real smile. Well, there is no technique for the real smile, because each one of us has a particular way of smiling. Just have a little thought, that this is the only way to make someone else happy , feel the warmth and voila, that’s your real smile, right there! So, next time…. Before you hear say cheese, you should be smiling on your own.
