We often think that no matter what we do, our teeth won’t go bad. “I’ve been eating candy my entire life, and there’s nothing wrong with my teeth” is a sentence I’ve personally heard many, many times. The thing is, this ignorance is terrible and will cause issues further down the road. I had a friend who had this opinion and not even a year after, his teeth started getting worse, and now he has more replacement teeth than his own.

We want to prevent this from happening, and we want to teach people about the dangers of doing certain things which are bad for the teeth. So, without further ado, here are seven everyday habits which can seriously damage teeth.

Chewing on Things

Chewing isn’t bad at all; in fact, we wouldn’t be able to survive without chewing our food. Besides, most of the food we eat is relatively soft and chewable, but some people like chewing on things that do not belong in your mouth.

For example, chewing gum is okay, but you shouldn’t do it every day or even multiple times in a single day. Too much chewing can not only cause your jaw muscles to hurt, but it can also negatively influence your teeth.

Eating Too Many Sweets

We all know that sweets are entirely capable of causing caries and teeth problems of the like, but there’s just no way you can give up on sweets completely. They’re tasty; what can I say. But, you should limit the intake of sweets and attempt to eat sweets a maximum of once a week. Even that is brushing the edge, but it’s manageable.

Drinking Soft Drinks

Soft drinks are tasty and often capable enough to quench our thirst, but they are by no means a healthy drinking option. Soft drinks contain a lot of sugar, and I mean a lot. They’re some of the worst fluids you can drink because they have no health benefits associated with them.

And, they’re bad for your teeth too. Due to the high amount of sugar (plus other ingredients), they can cause teeth damage and degradation of tooth enamel.

Brushing Your Teeth Too Hard

You don’t have to brush your teeth as hard as possible for the brushing to be effective. Some of the people I know have very worn-out toothbrushes that look completely ruined, yet they still brush their teeth with them.

Brushing too hard can cause damage to the gums which is painful in itself, but it can also displace tooth filling (which will then leave an opening in your tooth; the same one you went to close). Food pieces and other stuff can end up in this hole and can cause severe damage to the tooth. Be gentle!

Using Teeth as Tools

Here’s something from personal experience – Never use your teeth as tools. Sometimes, when I went out with friends, I’d use my teeth to open a bottle of beer (the one which requires a bottle opener). I saw my friend chip his tooth after doing so and, since then, I haven’t done it once.

Your teeth might feel strong, but in the face of something that requires a lot of force – they’re nothing. Don’t use your teeth as tools!

Grinding Your Teeth

On the other hand, some people have issues with controlling their temper, so they grind their teeth as a way of calming down. Besides, you don’t even have to have temper issues to grind your teeth; sometimes it happens naturally.

However, this isn’t good because your teeth are taking the brunt of the damage. Try avoiding grinding your teeth at all times.

Forgetting to Brush Your Teeth

Without using toothpaste and a toothbrush to keep dental hygiene at a high level, you might start seeing problems arise (such as caries). Forgetting to brush once and then managing it in the future is okay, but not brushing constantly is bad. Just as you’d teach your kids always to brush their teeth, teach yourself to never skip brushing!
